Bhavana

Bhavana Balachandran, hailing from Thrissur, Kerala, debuted in Tamil with Mysskin's 'Chithiram Pesuthedi' (2005). Before that, she was part of more than a dozen hits in Malayalam, starting with her debut film, 'Nammal'. The exuberant actress scored a superhit last year with 'Jayam Kondaan'.

Nayantara

One of the highest paid actresses in south India, Nayantara aka Diana Kurien began her career with 'Manassinakkare' (2003) in Malayalam. She debuted in Kollywood with the Sarathkumar starrer, 'Ayya'.

Rajnikanth's 'Chandramukhi' catapulted her to the big league. There has been no looking back, post-'Chandramukhi'.

Meera Nandan

Meera Nandan is an upcoming malayalam actress and a television anchor. She started her career through the popular reality show, ISS on Asianet. She acted in malayalam film "Mulla" in 2008. Meera Nandan the girl from Kerala acted in Malayalam films like Mulla, Puthiya mukham and Banaras.

After Bhavana, Kavya and Meera, here comes another Meera from Mollywood to join the race to rule the Kollywood tinseldom. Let's hope that this 17-year old Kerala girl makes it big in Kollywood, much like her predecessors.

Meera Jasmine

Meera Jasmine, national award winner made her movie debut with 'Soothradharan', directed by Lohithadas, in 2001.

She hit Kollywood with 'Run' and has, since then, starred in many hits such as 'Ayudha Ezhuthu' and 'Sandakozhi'. Meera is a superstar in all four South Indian film industries.

Mamta Mohandas

Hailing from Kozhikode, Kerala, Mamta debuted in films with 'Mayookham' (2005). Her steamy scenes in 'Lanka', a Malayalam film starring Suresh Gopi, paved way for her Tollywood and Kollywood debuts.

Mamta has many superhits to her credit in Telugu (including 'Homam' and Nagarjuna starrer 'King').

Bhama

Bhama started her film career in 2007 through Nivedyam directed by Lohithadas. Before her entry to film industry, she was doing a matrimonial programme on television titled Thaali.
she debuted with 'Ellam Avan Seyal', which has been declared a superhit.

Ananya

Ananya made her debut with the Malayalam Malayalam film - Positive. Recently she acted with Jayaram in Rahasya Police. She has played a very important role in the Tamil hit Nadodigal. Her debut film in Telugu is 'Amayakudu'.

Ananya is balancing her career between academics and films. In her final year of BA specializing in Journalism, Visual Communication Ananya has a very professional attitude towards films.

Asin
Asin has been the most successful crossover actress from Malayalam. (So far!). She began with 'Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka' in 2001 and hit big time with 'M. Kumaran son of Mahalakshmi' (2004). Superhits 'Ghajini' and 'Pokkiri' made her a superstar and the Hindi 'Ghajini' has the whole of India singing her peans!

Dileep and Kavya the hit pair are coming together again with Paapi Appacha, a comedy film directed by debutant Mammas.

Remember Kavya and Dileep have done many hit films like , Chandranudikkunu Dikhil, Tenkasipattanam, Meesa Madhavan, Thilakkam, Lion etc. They have won the Medimix “Best Pair” award and have featured in a dozen films together.

Now if they come together it will be their 13th film together. It all depends whether the Producers association will allow the producers Subair and Anoop to start Christian Brothers. If the Joshy directed film does not start its shoot by December 15, Dileep will start Pappi Appacha from December 20, and Kavya will be his heroine.

At a time when glamour rules the roost in the industry, not many have the courage to say no to glam roles.

Ananya, a Malayalam actress who is now making her debut in Tamil with Nadodigal, is different.
Says the actress, “I just want to play nice characters. I only look at how strong my characters are and how my costumes in the film will be. I don’t want to do glamour roles. I believe that an artiste can survive in this industry by doing good character roles alone. I don’t think one can survive on glamour. Even if that is the case, I don’t want to do such roles.”

The lass, who is elated that she has been a part of a good project, plays director-cum-actor Sasi’s girl in the movie. She says, “I play Sasi sir’s pair in this movie. It’s a joyful character which has a specific mannerism. It is so wonderful. I’m so grateful to God that I’ve got a good film to debut with in the Tamil industry.”

Going on to state how she landed the role in Nadodigal, the actress says, “It was director Kani (Samudrakani) sir and Kathir (the cameraman of Nadodigal) anna who first saw my pictures. They then met me and realised that I looked lean and fit. They asked me how I had managed to cut down on my weight as I looked a little plump in the pictures. I told them that it was through diet control and exercise. They then asked me to come for a photo shoot, after which they selected me to play the character of Nallamma in the film. I think the movie has come out nicely. It was a pleasure working on this project as everybody associated with it was very helpful.”

Helpful? We ask and she replies with a smile, “On the first day of shooting, I was not able to understand a single word of what the crew was speaking. It was then that Sasi sir and the director decided to teach me Tamil. For the next 15 days, they taught me Tamil and I reached a stage where I was able to understand what was being said. The whole crew talked to me in Tamil. Now, you hear me speaking in Tamil.”

Ananya made her debut in the Malayalam industry with the movie Positive. Apart from her Tamil project, she also has two other Malayalam films, including Rahasiya Police, waiting to hit the screens.

Says the actress, “Rahasiya Police is a crime thriller in which actor Jayaram plays a double role. The movie is expected to release on July 4.”
So, does she have any other Tamil projects on hand? “There have been offers but I have not committed myself to doing any at the moment. I’m waiting for Nadodigal to release as I’m eager to see the response to the film,” she signs off.

Life before coming to films?

It's simple. I don't have any filmy background. Just I have been passionate about films since my childhood. After doing my 10th class, I got the offer in Malayalam film – nammal opposite newcomers like Siddharth, Jishnu and Renuka Menon. My education was stopped with just intermediate. Later, I did some good films at malayalam industry, before getting into Kollywood. Now, I am in Telugu setting my foot here with Ontari.

Who is your godfather?

God alone is my godfather. I don't need to tell you much. It is really tough to get into the glamour world. Even if we enter, the longevity is doubtful. Trends are changing. Different scripts are coming up every day. I believe in God and He will continuously help people who ever keep trying to improve their knowledge in their respective fields. I respect talent. This attitude always protects me in the profession and personal life as well.

Is Bhavana your real name or Screen name?

My real name is Karthika. Bhavana is my screen name.

Ontari brought you rave reviews. When are you going to act with big heroes?

I know that when a film clicks, it also brings luck to the heroine. She will find herself through stardom. I don't believe in things like acting with big heroes when we get a break. I always consider myself as an actress, first.

How do you respond to gossips?

I don't think there are any gossips about me. I don't really take this thing seriously. Just like that they come and go. They are like seasonal diseases. When we maintain professional attitude, it is the best way to keep rumors at bay. Making friendship just to follow a fad is something that contributes to gossiping. Other than romance and marriage or separation, you don't find anything else.

What are your professional priorities?

See, now I have an identity as an actress. Every professional will have its priorities. I am almost 20-films old. I have a perception of my own. I give great importance to story, followed by the track record of its producer and the talent of the director and my costar. All these things need not be compulsory, but a glance at these things makes an actress professional. This approach will definitely help a heroine in the longer run.

What do you do keep yourself fit?

I do yoga. I take good food. I never diet. I keep myself always happy. I don't think we have any right to disturb our minds. And also, it our foremost duty to maintain physical agility. Not only artistes, I think health should be taken care of by all people.

You did all over the South. When are you going to Bollywood?

Of course, every heroine from the South will eye for Bollywood. When we dream of Bollywood, we should also know that we are just dreaming. We should do something worthwhile to realize the dreams. Watching my film – Chintamani Kolai Case (Malayalam), a filmmaker from Mumbai approached me to do the Hindi version myself. But, that time I was young and couldn't take decisions of my own. Also, I was busy with a couple of Tamil films. I didn't accept the Hindi project. I don't know what happened later. I am 22 now. If such a thing repeats, definitely, I will take good decisions.

You are frank enough to say that you are 22. Do you think heroine generally reveal their age?

Yes. I am 22. Why should I hide my age? What would I be getting out of it? There are three things. Either you should reveal your original age, or make false statement, or remain silent. Which one you think is better? It will be there in my passport, driving license and everywhere. I can't also escape the Net information. I too am aware of it. Generally, girls feel embarrassed to reveal their age. Always, girls try to reduce the original figure, but not all girls.

What's your opinion about love and marriage?

They are vey important to live a good life. See, everybody loves. Marriage is part of our lives. We can't simply evade it. As of me I never say I never loved. But, definitely I will marry the right guy.

You are a +2 dropout. Don't you think you missed your college life?

Yes. At first, I felt very bad. Later, I forget about it. I am now satisfied that pursuing film career is also like education. You get recognized. You do entertain a large number of people. I hope to continue my studies. This I will definitely do after marriage.

You said God is your godfather. Who is your favorite God?

It's Lord Guruvayurappa in our Kerala. He is Lord Krishna. His enchanting power mesmerizes me. Consciousness about him makes me cool at all times.

What's your taste for music?

I love music a lot. I listen to all sorts of music. Classical, Western, Hindustani and film stuff. I have a bagful of CDs and Cassettes. I also hum my favorite songs. Recently, I liked the song… Enthandaga Unnave.

Tell us what you don't like in the film industry?

There are a number of things which I hate and detest in the film industry. But, I can't tell you. Surely, I can't tell you. Just like that leave it. Please, don't ask for it.

What's your favorite dress?

I like Salwar Kameez and Jeans. I also like sarees.

Music, reading books.

Your future projects?

I am engaged to some film in Tamil and Malayalam. One film I doing as part of helping the poor and downtrodden artistes.

How did films happen?

I am Malayalee and brought up in Bahrain. I had finished my schooling there and came down to Banglore for the higher studies. While I was in the last year of my studies Hariharan (Malayalam director) saw me in a party and offered me the film Mayookam but I was not sure of accepting it. My plans were different. After finishing graduation, I wanted to study in UK and then to the middle East. So I took some time to accept the offer. I finished Mayookam my holidays, and it took more than four months to get the film released (November 2005). After that I started doing films from middle of 2006 and completed seven films so far in Malayalam.

Tell us about your entry into Telugu film.

It just did happen. I didn't plan it. Though I was offered movies earlier in Telugu, I didn't take up them. Then I got offer from M S Raju and Aata was supposed to be my launch pad but it didn't. Then I waited for an exciting movie offer with a great character. That I got from Rajamouli sir's Yamadonga. I was too happy when I heard about the gigantic project and importance of my role in the film. That is why I put my Tamil career on hold. We took 7 months to finish Yamadonga and it was worth it.

Malayalam film industry offers more performance-oriented roles than Telugu. Today Tamil and Telugu films are dominated with Malayalm girls. What do you see the reason for it?

Let us not underestimate Telugu movies. Its true that it is a male dominated industry but heroines are given importance here keeping their limitations in mind. I am talking with my experience in Yamadonga, so I could be wrong. Trust me, Telugu movies are doing very well in Kerala now. Recently Telugu movies are releasing in Kerala too. They are catering to what the audience is expecting from a movie.

Malayalam movies have also got into the realm of making movies that are entirely focused on heroes, where we have little to do. But yes, once in a while good stories are written..and meanwhile we Malayali girls would be busy elsewhere. Ha..ha..(laughs)

You have also become busy as singer? What do you prefer to be known - a singer or an actress?

As a singing actress. I am an actress now and a singer forever.

Are you also mastering the Telugu language? How is the dubbing experience in Telugu as you are new to the language especially the Nellore slang that you performed in Yamadonga?

(Ha..Haa) It was as tough I was trying to make the next-to-impossible possible. Even after recording 6 songs in Telugu now and having completed Yamadonga's dubbing, I must confess that I know very little. I am familiar with words but can not speak yet as its very different from my mother tongue Malayalam. But what one must understand is that there is a world's difference between recording and dubbing.

The Nellore slang has a weird tune and the dialogues of my character go in various modulations. It was quite embarrassing to say some lines because in the dubbing theatre, it would have sounded too funny to my mom, the directors and sound engineers sitting in the console unit. But dubbing has made my understanding of the language better and I thank Rajamouli sir for insisting me to do it. It was a pleasure and a privilege to voice my character. I know all my lines by heart now.

What are your next plans?

Right now Yamadonga is big for me. I want to take it easy and watch both my singing and acting grow at a gradual pace.

How is acting in a socio-fantasy like Yamadonga, particularly as one of the two main heroines while three other heroines share the screen?

It is one of the best characters that a heroine could have asked in her career. It is different and rare. It feels great to be part of such a big movie and I think that is what counts at the end.

Has Tollywood been working well for you?

Both as a singer and an actress, It has been working well for me, I didn't expect it though. Rakhee was something that came after an unpleasant surprise (replacements etc.) but was a great take off for me and everything that followed were pleasant.

Say more about winning Filmfare Award

It is awesome feeling. Because it was my first song ever. It was a big dream that my first song should be for a movie and with a big music director and it came as a shock when Devi walked in while my photo shoot was happening. Devi and I were strangers to each other and Rakhee's recording happened on the same day.

She says Telugu films, the dubbed versions or the remakes do very well in Kerala. Bommarillu starring Siddharth has been remade with Bharat. Girls, women love Allu Arjun and consider him a very happening actor.

"My friends in college never miss his films, all his films are a hit here, run for 100 days, they keep themselves constantly updated about him and even ask me about him if I have ever met him during my shoots in Hyderabad and so on."

The actress says her name Ananya means 'unique' or 'something that doesn't have an end'. She has played a very important role in the Tamil hit Nadodigal which is being remade here as Sambho Siva Sambho. Priyamani is playing Ananya's role.

She has done three Malayalam films so far - Positive, Rahasya Police and Fiddle. Her debut film in Telugu is 'Amayakudu' in which Krishnudu plays the hero. She says, "Don't get confused by my name. There is another Malayalam actress Saranya who is playing heroine in Krishnudu starrer 'Village Lo Vinayakudu'."

In Amayakudu, Ananya will be seen as Divya, a student in an engineering college, a rank holder in the State, has lot of problems at home, gets introduced to Krishnudu who will eventually propose to her. Krishnudu likes Divya and he in turn is liked by Geeta Singh. The actress began her career in films after being spotted in reality shows.

So how is the food in Hyderabad? She remarks, "It's very spicy. But I'm surprised people in Hyderabad keep eating here all the time. No wonder they are fat. In Kerala we eat only when we are hungry and we eat only little." There is little to dispute here as assistants were seen pampering the stars with salads, snacks, fruit juices every half an hour on the sets.

Bhavan Balachandran, Kerala's sweetheart was born on June 6, 1986 at thrichur, Kerala. Bhavana is the daughter of assistant cinematographer, G. Balachandran Menon and Pushpa. She has one brother who is currently living in Canada.

She received a lot of attention when Ilayathalapathy Vijay labeled her as the next Asin in Tamil cinema. Today Poorna is busy with a handful of films.

Tell us about your role in Vitthagan…

I play the role of Mercy and it was quite a challenge for me. For the first time I’m using a gun in a film, for the climax scene I do the things that a hero would normally do. Working with Parthiban sir is a great experience because as a director he has the ability to bring out the best in his artistes.

Now that Asin has moved to Bollywood, do you aspire to replace her down south?

All said and done it was a dream come true when Vijay sir complimented me during the audio launch. I’m proud of the fact that people think I look like her, but I still have a long way to go before I reach where she is now.

We’ve heard you are trained classical dancer.

Yes, I’m addicted to dance. If I’m given an opportunity to play the role of a classical dancer, I would gladly do it for free.

What are the projects you are working on?

I’m doing a film called Drohi with Sudha, who was earlier Mani Ratnam sir’s assistant. Srikanth and Vishnu play the male leads in this movie. It’s a lot of fun to work with a lady director and I also get to do high action sequences here. Apart from this, I have Arjunan Kadhali with Jai, Kandha Kottai with Nakul, an untitled venture with Arya, and Josh in Kannada. Talks are in progress to discuss a couple of offers in Telugu.

Asin alias Asin Thottumkal, the reigning queen of Tamil films from Kerala, was born on 26th October, 1985 to Joseph Thottumkal, a businessman and a doctor mother Seline Thottumkal. Even from a young age she showed a drive to succeed in whatever she did.. be it a stint in business or modeling.

She started modeling at the age of 14 and has endorsed many popular brands including Pepsi, Ponds, Limca, Fair and Lovely, Medimix, Prince Jewellery, Kumaram Silks etc.. After that she got countless offers from the Tollywood Industry- 'Lakshmi Narasimha' (2004), 'Gharshana' (2004) etc., being some of them.

In Tamil, she had problems initially with her first movie 'Ullam Ketkumae' being cancelled and another movie 'Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam' with Surya being stalled. But the scenario changed with the release of 'M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi'(2005) which became one of the biggest hits in 2005. After that she was flooded with offers from well known Tamil directors and there was no looking back.

She received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance in her second super hit Tamil film, Ghajini (2005). She won the hearts of the Tamil audience with her captivating performance in the movie, which could be termed as her biggest commercial success till date. Ghajini and another top grosser, an action comedy 'Varalaru' in 2006 established her as one of the most prominent leading actresses of South Indian cinema.

Apart from films, she is also a Brand Ambassador for Fairever, Tanishq, BIG 92.7 FM, Spinz, Parachute, Colgate and Mirinda. This charming beauty has her head firmly on her shoulders and knows exactly the way to move. Now she is making a debut in Bollywood, in the remake of Ghajini opposite Amir Khan who was so impressed with her superb performance in the original that he recommended her to act the female lead in its Hindi version.
